ORA Chokoloskee is surrounded by water, most immediately Chokoloskee Bay, which is part of the Gulf of Mexico.
The mangrove islands form a several mile barrier between the Florida mainland and the Gulf. And the mainland is mostly Everglades in this area, flooded by fresh water during the summer and peppered with streams, rivers, and upland hammocks during the winter.
Kayaking, canoeing, boating, fishing, crabbing, boat touring, and sailing are major attractions that consume the lives of ORA residents. Swimming is popular on the outer island sandy beaches skirting the Gulf. And the area is an internationally famous birding paradise.
